July 2009 In its issue of June 2009, Chaos has published a special section containing nine papers that address the question "Is the normal heart rate chaotic?". The discussion was initiated last year as a joint effort of Chaos and PhysioNet, which provided a collection of fifteen 20-24 hour RR interval time series derived from three PhysioBank ECG databases as a common focus for investigation of this question.
February 2009: Salvaging Signals for Health. In a Computing Life "Web Extra", writer Emily Carson introduces PhysioNet to a general audience, emphasizing how its data and software archives provide a wealth of opportunities for scientists and students alike to study complex physiologic signals and time series in innovative ways. Computing Life is a publication of the NIH's National Institute of General Medical Sciences that explores "how scientists use computers to advance our understanding of biology and human health."
Fall 2008: The Golden Age of Public Databases: Speeding Biomedical Discovery. This feature article, written by Regina Nuzzo for Biomedical Computation Review, explores the promise and challenges of open access to research data, drawing insights from PhysioNet and other public data archives.
October 2008: NOVA: Hunting the Hidden Dimension. In chapter 4 of this episode of the acclaimed PBS television series, PhysioNet PI Ary Goldberger connects fractal patterns in heart rate variability with health.
July 2008: A sensible censor for sharing medical records: MIT-developed software helps protect patient privacy. This article was written by Elizabeth Thompson of the MIT News Office for the on-line journal BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making on the publication of Automated De-Identification of Free-Text Medical Records and was widely reprinted. See De-identification: software and test data.
June 2008: Monitoring Sleep One Z at a Time, in NIBIB Newsroom. The software described in this article and the next draws on methods developed for the PhysioNet/Computers in Cardiology Challenge 2000.
Fall 2007: Losing Sleep, in Proto: Massachusetts General Hospital Dispatches from the Frontiers of Medicine.

About 1600 scholarly papers are published each year that make use of data or software found on PhysioNet. PhysioNet resources have also played a supportive or central role in many US patents. You can find patents, patent applications, and thousands of articles that cite or mention PhysioNet or its major components here.
