MIMIC II: Clinical Database Flat Files

The new PhysioNet website is available at: https://physionet.org. We welcome your feedback.

Thank you for your interest in the MIMIC II Clinical Database. In order to begin using the restricted flat file data, you must have received an email from us accepting your Data Use Agreement application. The flat files can then be accessed through the following steps:

  1. Create your passphrase-file first:

Create a text file in a secure location, containing the encryption key sent to you by email when your Data Use Agreement was approved. The encryption key line in the text file should contain no spaces and should be exactly 44 characters long. Your file must be a plain text file (use a program such as Notepad on Windows to create it). It shouldn't have any extra line-ending character. You may give this passphrase-file any name you wish (we suggest "mimic2.key"). Don't lose it!

  2. Download the encrypted flat files:

  3. Unpack the decrypted files:

Follow the instructions provided here to decrypt these files. The decrypted files are tarballs (gzip-compressed tar archives; see this note for instructions on unpacking tarballs.

Troubleshooting:

If you have problems in downloading or decrypting the restricted-data flat files, please verify that you are able to decrypt the sample text file available at http://physionet.org/physiotools/gnupg/ following the instructions there. If you are unable to do this, you may need more help than we can provide; seek a local expert who can assist you in this case. Please note that when downloading the data files, for example, "n1.tar.gz.gpg", some browsers may rename the file to "n1.tar.gz.gpg.gz", adding the additional ".gz" extension. This file name may be unreadable to file archiver application. Please rename the file to remove the additional extension.

If you have been successful in decrypting the sample text file but not the restricted-data files, you may request help by writing to

If you have successfully decrypted the restricted-data files, and you need helpin understanding or using them, please write to
